The pro-active gentleman.

I have never told this story to anyone (with good reason) We have known the family for a many years and on this particular day in Lagos (1995/6) we had visited the house in Festac to pick up a parcel, only to find nobody home. As we departed uncle Emeka was driving into the close so I turned the car around and parked in one of the bays. He came up to us and greeted my Grandma, said he just needed to drop some things in the house and would be back with our package. Uncle took out a gas cylinder with ease from the back of his car and made his way to the house as we sat awaiting his arrival. Moments later I went to meet him at the gate of the house to get the item and was greeted with a very stern scolding. "How could you sit there and watch me carry those items from the car?". I can tell you this, the thought never crossed my mind. I had always seen myself as respectful and willing to help at any time, but here was state of mind I had overlooked: "the pro-active gentleman". Uncle had just shone a light on a completely different level of awareness for me. To this day I am always on the look out for how I might be of service. I still feel that sting you get when you realise did something stupid. I hope you know I meant no disrespect uncle. Thank you for your candour. I am a better person for it. We will all miss you.
